In September 2016 we had the first trial, conviction and sentencing by the Int’l Criminal Court in The Hague of an individual for heritage destruction as a war crime (mausoleums in Timbuktu). Now in September 2020, we have the first CEO of a major multinational company, Rio Tinto, stepping down over ill-conceived and badly handled destruction of an ancient Aboriginal site in Western Australia. And institutional investors played a major role in his reprimand. Unlike environmental resources, the protection and sustainable management of cultural heritage resources has been largely absent from global sustainability guidelines. Actions like this show that people are waking up to the importance of heritage in creating a sustainable future. And for local heritage stakeholders…things are getting more interesting. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-54112991
